Congratulations to December’s aide of the month, Laurie Schlacter. Laurie has been working with FCS for more than 42 years. She received her license through the FCS CHHA training course.

When she claimed her independence, she discovered a passion for helping the elderly. She was the caregiver for her grandfather, Burr Cook, writer of NBC’s early dramatic radio program, Harbor Lights. He had several aides and one, in particular, was an employee with FCS. The former FCS aide noticed Laurie’s dedication to improving her grandfather’s health and suggested she explore Home Care. Laurie shared that in the same week, she went on to apply for the course and passed.

All CHHAs must complete 76 hours of specialized training, pass a competency evaluation, and undergo a criminal background check before becoming certified and licensed by the New Jersey Board of Nursing. CHHAs work under the guidance and direction of a Registered Nurse and must undergo training in personal care skills, including bathing, dressing, shopping, meal preparation, Range of Motion assistance, and a variety of other tasks.

Laurie was ecstatic about being December’s aide of the month for going beyond her duties. When asked what do you think the most important qualities of being a CHHA are, she responded. “You must possess compassion and be open for change.”

Laurie shared her clients would be in desperate situations without her help. She believes they view her as family.

Laurie would tell someone who was pursuing a career in Home Care, to “pay attention to detail and take training seriously to improve others health”.

Thank you Laurie, for your dedication to FCS!
