Can you imagine a home with no books? Research suggests that as many as 61% of low-income families do not read to their children on a regular basis and that 70% of students nationwide are scoring below grade level on reading tests – even right here in Monmouth County.
Reading Buddies is designed to help. Launched in 1998, this early-childhood literacy development program advances literacy skills and creates enthusiastic, confident young readers in 16 public schools throughout Monmouth County. It is the only in-school reading program in the county, and the majority of the partner schools are in neighborhoods where the population is underserved.
On a weekly basis, volunteer readers visit the schools for one hour and read aloud to students in kindergarten through second grade.
- Links 200 volunteers, primarily seniors, with more than 1,600 elementary-aged students.
- Continues during the summer as the Reading Buddies Summer Program in-school based enrichment programs.
Give the Gift of Literacy this Holiday Season!
Barnes & Noble® in Holmdel collecting books for Reading Buddies.
We're encouraging everyone to give the gift of literacy this holiday season by donating to the Holiday Book Drive at the Barnes & Noble book store in Holmdel. From now through the end of the year, shoppers to the Holmdel store can purchase a new age-appropriate children’s book to donate to FCS to distribute to local school children served by our Reading Buddies program. It's simple!

In addition, the company will be offering a special Book Fair on "Giving Tuesday", December 3rd. ON that day, shoppers at ANY Barnes & Noble store or online can use a special code and a portion of their purchases will be donated to FCS. Download the flyer & code here:
